What kindergarten through second grade looks like here, and how children change across those years.
Plan a visitIn the Primary room, children in kindergarten through second grade work at tables in small groups. A teacher sits with two or three at a time, so a child who needs a concept explained again gets that time. Others read, build, or write on their own nearby.
Class sizes are kept small on purpose, which gives each child more individual attention. The curriculum is progressive and innovative, so lessons change as children grow rather than repeat the same worksheets.
By the end of second grade, most children read longer books, write several sentences, and solve math problems with two digits. They also practice waiting, sharing materials, and asking a teacher for help instead of giving up. Ask about class size and daily schedules on a tour.
Five-year-olds want to know how everything works. They can concentrate on a task longer than they could in preschool and handle more complex thinking. Following rules and routines comes more easily now. Seeing another child's point of view, and working through a problem together, is a big part of how they learn and grow.
First graders are motivated learners who still need structure and routine. They soak up information and want sensible answers to their questions about the world. They are ready to look in more detail at their surroundings and figure out how they fit in.
Second graders build more complex thoughts and ideas. They apply their growing understanding of letters and numbers to harder material and begin to reason logically. They write complete sentences. They also become more aware of what other people think of them, and start to understand rules and their own role in helping people.
In a Primary room, children work in small groups, listen to stories, and return to projects across several days. Kindergartners stay with a task longer and follow routines on their own. First graders look for structure and ask for real answers. Second graders take on harder material and write in complete sentences.
You may notice your child sticking with a puzzle at home, or asking why something works the way it does. They start to see a sibling's side of an argument. They want the same routine each night. That growing focus and fairness is what the Primary years build, one day at a time.
